WE'RE HOME Travelling to Whangarei by vehicle from the South, the view as you breast the Brynderwyn Hills features the dramatic and powerful skyline of Bream Head. Limestone Matakohe Island in the Whangarei Harbour, is a Kiwi creche’ for the raising of kiwi birds that are then released into wild habitats. We offer a two or three day package of accommodation, food and unguided walking through farmland, forest and beaches, with many opportunities for bird watching in a variety of habitats. After the breeding season, the birds migrate to the central South Pacific before heading north to the North Pacific Ocean.
Just over 10 of the original indigenous forest remains today, with podocarp, kauri and broadleaf forests found on the rolling to steep hill country. Northland is one of only two regions in New Zealand which has extensive forests of large mangrove trees. The Poor Knights Lily is unique to only three offshore islands in New Zealand, including the Poor Knights Islands off the Tutukaka Coast. Oral history suggests that around 50 years later the forebears of Northland’s Ngapuhi Tribe arrived on the west coast at Hokianga, and local Maori history points to many more migrations in many more canoes soon after 100 AD. One explanation for the harbour’s full name Whangarei Terenga Paraoa is the swimming gathering place of whales which can be further interpreted as the meeting place of chiefs . By the 1700’s the land around Whangarei harbour was densely occupied by several sub tribes of the Ngapuhi confederation, as confirmed by archaeological evidence on virtually every prominent hill overlooking the great harbour and its valleys.
