What you should know about Culham Engineering Company
Founding Culham Engineering in 1958, Dave Culham played an important role in directing the Company up until his passing in 2012. The Company has a proud work history and was involved in some major contracts in its formative years. Presented with the opportunity to start his own business in 1958, Dave secured a 400 guarantee from his father, bought a welder, put it in the trunk of his Vauxhall car and thus began Culham Engineering. With the expansion at Refining NZ on the horizon, Dave saw that there would be a huge loss of staff and a requirement for skilled tradesmen so he increased the intake of apprentices to meet the demand for skilled staff.
One of Culham’s first major successful projects was the construction development of the Moerewa Freezing Works in Northland, New Zealand in 1962. The completion of this project established Culham’s reputation in engineering excellence based on the quality and workmanship of the job
Gary is responsible for Managing the Transport Division at Culham Engineering including the wealth and employees. As one of North land's largest employers, we understand that our people drive our success. In 2015 Dave was promoted to Procurement Manager to manage suppliers and develop purchasing strategies which confront budgetary and other operational requirements at Culham Engineering including the requirements of ISO 9001.
Working closely with Downer, Culham Engineering constructed this bridge in our Whangarei workshop. He understands the impact of workshop fabrication for site installation and he values the importance placed on meeting deadlines without compromising precision and quality of the work. We are elated of our proven ability to deliver quality results and innovative solutions for all of our clients, regardless of the size of the job. Dave has worked for Culham Engineering as the Deposit Manager for over 10 years. Culham Engineering took active segment on the New Venture Te Magi Ho project as a key business partner to Refining NZ. We are elated to have trained over 600 apprentices and remain to lead the industry in trade training employing currently 18 apprentices and are committed to carrying on the coming of this industry.
In 2014, behind the temporary of Dave, Culham Engineering again became the major sponsor of the Dave Culham Tanisha Cup. Culham Engineering are continually investing in infrastructure, people and the best equipment available to ensure we face our ongoing commitment to exceed customer expectations. In November 2015 Culham Engineering, in conjunction with the Whangarei District Council, designed four way finding Plinths for the Whangarei CAD. With a lifetime of experience in the company and the industry, Shane is healthy equipped to drive the future direction of Culham Engineering. Since 200 Stephen has been managing the workshops and been involved in the fabrication of many important projects including the Stainless Steel Cyclone for Golden Bay Cement, The Fa Sade for the Eden Park Upgrade and the structural steel for the Point Forward projects at Refining NZ. The size and scope of our projects and contracts have enabled Culham Engineering to build an impressive infrastructure of facilities, plant and equipment, services and expertise. We have the capacity and the capability to undertake major engineering projects to the highest standards. Our facilities are designed to handle significant multiple projects simultaneously. Our six on site covered fabrication workshops are serviced by six 5 tonne, four 10 tonne and two 20 tonne overhead gantry cranes. A 400 tonne capacity slipway with berthage facilities, allowing direct access to the Whangarei Harbour. Our six onsite covered fabrication workshops are spread over a 15,00 approx square metre area and are designed to handle significant multiple projects simultaneously. Our facilities also include a separate uncontaminated shop facility for stainless steel fabrication and sand shot blasting and painting facilities. Culham Engineering apply a wide variety of Industrial Coatings from abrasive blasted and primed interior structural steel, high temperature coatings to specialised piping and internal coatings to vessel linings. Culham's specialise in areas of Heavy Engineering ranging from storage tank construction to the fabrication and installation of structural steel, high pressure vessels, heat exchangers and piping systems. To optimise our processes for increased efficiency, reliability, accuracy and precision we continue to invest in the sophistication and capacity of the most modern fabricating and welding equipment on the market today. This gives us the ability to straighten the flange during welding while allowing repeatable straight flanges to attain unprecedented tolerances for fabricated beams no matter what the flange thickness. Culham’s highly sophisticated robotic steel beam assembler takes productivity and quality to a whole new level. Initially developed for the oil and gas industry, it allows our operators to switch rapidly back and forth between GTAW, GMAW or FCAW. Our Robotic CNC plasma cutting system has revolutionized structural steel fabrication. This machine has created a NEW STANDARD in the way you think about structural cutting. We have the capability to roll plate up to 52mm thick x 3mtr wide grade 250 plates and provide an unbeatable combination of rolling power and pre bending precision. Optimal plate drive is guaranteed by the capability to reduce to a minimum the distance between the lower rolls. This department employs a full time Nace Coatings Inspector with 22 years’ experience in Industrial Coatings and a CBIP Coatings Inspector with 30 years’ experience. The system has recently been upgraded with a Pneumatic Recovery System which not only gives the operators a more efficient ventilation system, clearer visibility, effectiveness in sighting the blast target but also ensures exclusion of dust and foreign matters from the abrasive during the blasting cycle. Culham Engineering also has two fully covered painting workshops set up with 5 tonne capacity gantries for handling items safely and efficiently. We use innovative techniques and the latest technologies, always with the aim of giving our clients a lot more than just what they ask for. Underpinning all our fabrication, painting and installation activities is our philosophy of Do it once, do it right, do it safely’
