The Back Extender Company Limited BECL was established in 1994 as a series of home exercise programs specifically for maximizing lower back function and preventing lower back problems. During a 3 year stint of study PhD in marine ecology in New Zealand from I trained as an Olympic weightlifter and was trying to gain a spot to go to Montreal Olympics in 1976. There I caught up with a past training buddy who had opened a chain of Nautilus centers with one designated as sports rehab unit. That led me to the decision to pursue a means to gain the professional qualification for do something similar.
In 1982, after finishing training, I joined forces with a like minded physical therapist in Honolulu and we began the first truly multi discipline rehabilitation facility in Hawaii with DCs, PTs, exercise therapists, deep tissue TPMT therapists and networks with pain management pschys. Over the next ten years I was fortunate to be involved in the initial beginnings of American Back Society and have had influences in my pursuits via Jim Cox, Leander Eckerd, Sig Miller, Rene Cailliet, Robin McKenzie and many others with ABS. This pursuit began with a mentor and friend, Tommy Kono ? We moved to New Zealand in 1991 to home school our children now six and as a lifestyle change ? although it was not exactly a good professional move. Additionally, with the move to this rather isolated area of the world with limited facilities, I underwent a paradigm shift in my approach to rehabbing backs. The paper was presented at a ?Spine In Action? conference in 1996 in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Presently, BackSmiths are only available in New Zealand however there are plans to begin production and sales overseas. with the goal of improving strength, stability and function of back pain sufferers and to train them how to use their backs the right way. The program is designed to be done as an in house protocol for providers with the end result of patients being released to an ongoing home program
